To celebrate the 60th anniversary of its founding, on September 25 and 26 Lee and Li, Attorneys-at-Law hosted a two-day symposium called “Sustainable Development—Transitioning from Rule by Law to Rule of Law to Achieve a Better System of Governance,” bringing together distinguished guests from government, business, and academia.
Former Vice President Vincent Siew (蕭萬長) delivered the opening address, recognizing Lee and Li for six decades of contributions to the rule of law and economic development in Taiwan. Dr. C. V. Chen (陳長文), Senior Partner of Lee and Li, then gave the keynote speech, “The Path to Sustainability: Moving from Rule by Man to Rule by Law to Reach the Rule of Law, for a Better System of Governance.” Dr. Chen also moderated the main forum. The forum featured in-depth multidisciplinary dialogue with former Premier Sean Chen (陳沖), former Vice President of the Judicial Yuan Su Yung-chin (蘇永欽), Pegatron Chairman T. H. Tung (童子賢), and United Daily News Executive Director Hsiang Kuo-ning (項國寧).
The symposium agenda encompassed important topics such as dispute resolution, intellectual property rights, energy transition, financial innovation, and corporate governance. On the first day, panelists explored strategies for next-generation intellectual property deployment and management, sharing how enterprises can integrate forward-looking legal and governance strategies to enhance their competitive edge. The afternoon session, “Dispute Resolution and Sustainable Development,” examined how the rule of law promotes social progress from constitutional, criminal, public, and private law perspectives.
The second day’s “Energy Policy and Sustainable Development” forum featured representatives from energy regulators and leaders in the renewable energy industry to discuss Taiwan’s energy transition policy and challenges. The “Financial Innovation and Sustainable Development” session highlighted carbon trading and green financial instruments. The final session, “Corporate Governance and Sustainable Development,” addressed legal compliance risks and challenges in sustainability faced by corporations, providing the business community with legal insights and actionable recommendations.
Since its founding in 1965, Lee and Li has been instrumental in every momentous stage of Taiwan’s economic ascent, facilitating foreign investment and growth of the local industry, and pushing for legal reform and the establishment of the rule of law. This 60th anniversary symposium was a platform to share the invaluable lessons we have learned along the way to hopefully illuminate a path forward for the rule of law in the Chinese-speaking world.
Looking ahead, with a global outlook we will continue to foster interdisciplinary collaboration. We will also deepen our practice in areas such as sustainable development, the intersection of public and private law, intellectual property rights, corporate governance, energy transition, and green finance. It is our unwavering belief that law serves not only as a regulatory framework but also as a driving force in our society.
